  • Choir festival

Tue 23 Oct 2018 Mrs Smith

On Friday our school Choir attended the Bolsover District talent Showcase at  Sports Direct in Shirebrook.

The choir consisted of 47 children ranging from the age of 6 up to 11. The children looked absolutely fantastic in their new choir uniform and most of the girls had their hair in a plait with red ribbons.

The evening began at 6pm with a sound check and then the concert began at 7.30pm. Our children sat and listened to three other acts before it was our turn - they listened, clapped, joined in and even danced to some of the songs!

When it was our turn it was already 8pm and despite being tired the children's performance was outstanding. They sounded brilliant as they sang their way through 5 numbers from Disney and The Greatest Showman.

There were several soloists who had to get used to singing with microphones and in front of a large audience.

Talking of the audience, it was great to see how many parents and friends had paid to see our children perform - it makes a huge difference to the children -  and the smiles on their faces when they recognised familiar faces in the crowd was a joy to see.

A massive thank you must go to Mrs Johnson who has given up so much of her time to ensure that the choir could perform to such a high quality and thank you also to Mrs Bonsall for helping with the music and the organisation.

After a busy week at work I initially wondered why I had given up my Friday evening for a school event, but the children were amazing - both their behaviour and their performance. I was so glad to be able to accompany them on their first 'gig.' I hear on the grapevine that there might be many more to come!

    Harvest Festival

On Wednesday 17th October the Harvest festival took place in the main hall. All of the children were really excited. Each class had prepared something special for the parents, there was a rap. Poems, prayers and information about harvest around the world.

Reverend Karen then hosted a competition where Jake and Neeve had to describe a fruit or vegetable by touch alone to the rest of us and we had to guess what it was.

Lots and lots of food had been donated very kindly by the parents, Rev. Karen took this to the food bank in Shirebrook after the service.

There was also a competition run by the Derbyshire Catering Service in which the children had to make some kind of animal out of fruit and vegetables. There were lots of entries and the school winner was Abbie Steel. The Catering team chose Humpty Dumpty by Oliver and Rose Bollington. This will go through to the Derbyshire round of the competition.

Good luck to them and thank you to all the parents who helped by providing the food and ideas.

    Choir performance

    On Friday 19th of October, the Choir will perform at Sports Direct. The children are really excited and they have already prepared for it. Here is a quotation from Tyler Geraghty;

“Im really looking forward to it and I hope the community will enjoy it as much as we do. Thank you to Mrs Johnson for allowing us to do this.”

The Choir is made up of really talented singers and they were chosen by Mrs Johnson herself. Some of the choir have stayed in it from last time which was last year. There are about 5 boys in the choir. The children will wear a grey top with red writing on. Here is a photo of the choir last year.

  • Stand Up Derbyshire Day

    Wed 03 Oct 2018

    Stand up Derbyshire Day

Stand up Derbyshire was all about recognising that we could still learn whilst keeping fit, school is not all about sitting down, we can read, write, act, calculate and play whilst standing up, running round and keeping fit.

We started the day with an assembly for Key Stage 2 and then one for Key Stage 1 and Reception when we trained to become a “Jedi”. It was lots of fun and all the moves soon had us out of breath. It was a really good exercise routine to follow. Each class then took part in some different activities and we all met at the end for a Daily Mile relay on our new super-duper track

Year 6 completed some Maths activities in the hall. It was all about working in a group whilst during Literacy they once again worked in groups to expand on some story openers. Guided reading was completed on the playground!

Year 5 completed some group work for Maths and acted out their story for Literary. In the afternoon they did the daily mile and they did not sit down all day.

Year 4 did the daily mile in the afternoon with the rest of the school, push ups, planks (5 minutes), cart wheel, snakes and ladders, and then they wrote about an upside-down castle.

Year 3 enjoyed extreme reading on the playground, Numeracy challenges such as standing on 1 leg and doing star jumps.

Year 2 worked on the playground with number bonds to 20 and then acted out the story “Whatever Next” They really enjoyed being the teddy who built a space rocket to go up to space in.

Year 1 threw balls to each other and counted in fives every time they caught it. They took part in our daily mile relay as well.

We finished off with an assembly at the end of the day when we shared all our “Stand up” learning with each other. What a wonderful (if tiring) day!!

    New Peer Buddies

In Years 5 and 6 there are some new Peer buddies and there are 2 children for each day.

The peer buddies are there if you don’t have anyone to play with. You can find them under the veranda on the Key stage 2 playground. You can go and chat to them and they might have some ideas about what you could play.  They will also find someone who you can play with. These children have been trained and know just how to talk to you.

Here are the days for the Peer Buddies:

    Monday         Tuesday       Wednesday      Thursday          Friday

    Grace.S             Caitlin           Jennifer               Brodie           Summer

    Sarah.L               Rhys             Kaiden               Charlie           Che`

We are sure that they will do a wonderful job to help us all enjoy our playtimes and lunchtimes.
