Anthony Bek's Sport Vision

Intent

Anthony Bek recognises and values the importance of Physical Education (P.E). Our vision for Physical Education and Sport is that every child should have the opportunity to take part in physical activity on a regular basis and become more physically confident and competent. We hope that, through all the sporting opportunities and physical activity we offer, the children will potentially develop a love and passion for sport and continue this into their later lives. We follow the aims of the National Curriculum to ensure that children

• develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities

• are physically active for sustained periods of time

• engage in competitive sports and activities

• lead healthy, active lives

At Anthony Bek, we strive to give as many children as possible the opportunity to compete in a variety of competitions, during school time or by representing the school at local events. We hope that in doing so the children will develop greater confidence, team work and learn to win or lose with grace and sportsmanship.

It is also of paramount importance that we create sporting leaders during the children's time at Anthony Bek. We aim to offer lots of children the opportunity to lead sporting activities, organise games and events and learn to lead by example. By emphasising leadership, we hope the children learn the importance of communication, organisation, team work, resilience, perseverance and a respect for rules.

PE and Sport are a proud part of the Anthony Bek experience and we hope that this continues to grow in the future and prepare our children for life after Anthony Bek.

Implementation

We aim to provide the children with at least 2 hours of fun, exciting and active PE lessons every week and to keep the children healthy and active every day with at least 30 minutes extra of physical activity. We educate them on a healthy, balanced diet and lifestyle.

Our curriculum is taught through the use of Twinkl’s Move schemes of work and we work in partnership with First Grade Sports for gymnastics and dance. These schemes are adaptable to suit the needs of each child, within each class and give teachers the basis of what is expected from each year group. The schemes are taught by all of our teachers.

Classes also have the opportunity to take part in the ‘Daily Mile’ using our running track.

As a school, we are supported by Bolsover School Sport partnership in the development of sport within our school. They provide us with the opportunities to compete and learn within a range of different sports.

Each lesson, children are given the opportunity to practise skills in a variety of ways and each lesson builds upon the previous skills, allowing them time to embed it. Different skills are recapped throughout, and across, the years, each time they are being built upon; allowing children to know more and remember more.

Our year 5 and 6 classes attend swimming lessons to ensure that our children leave school with the ability to swim 25m confidently and unassisted. Each class takes it in turns and the lessons run through the whole year.

Impact

Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at Anthony Bek; not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines that PE promotes.

In all classes, children possess a wide range of physical abilities. Whilst recognising this fact, we provide suitable learning opportunities for all children by matching the challenge of the task to the ability of the child. Children at Anthony Bek make good progress in PE and are eager to attend after school clubs and competitive sports events.
